Mr. William E. Johnstone III

Obituary for Mr. William E. Johnstone III

January 9, 2021
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

WILLIAM E. JOHNSTONE III, "Bill", age 74, of NE Philadelphia, PA, passed away unexpectedly on January 9, 2021 after a courageous battle. He was born in Philadelphia, PA and was the son of the late William E. Jr., and Adele Johnstone.
Bill was the beloved husband of Maureen (nee Gaffney) and they had just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in September. He was the loving father of William E. "Bill" IV (wife Jennifer), Michael (wife Sara), and Kelli Johnstone. Bill will be greatly missed by his grandchildren Julianne, Jaclyn, Emma, and Luke, and by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his sister Judith McBride, and his brother Robert Johnstone.
Bill was very proud to have served his country during Vietnam and was stationed in Germany for two years. He would often share stories of his time overseas that were so vivid, you felt like you were transported there with him. His time in the army was the catalyst for his career in computers - building, fixing, and installing them before most people ever owned one. Bill was an implementation manager for UNISYS, where he worked for over 40 years before retiring in 2010.
Bill was a true handyman who could repair and build anything; from constructing computers from scratch using components and parts, to building his own stereo from tubes, to rebuilding his 1913 Enfield rifle at the age of 12 and making his own custom wood cabinets. His children would often call him for advice on projects or home improvement mishaps. Bill enjoyed going to the gun range with friends and family, admired antique cars, and watched home improvement shows. Above all, he was a family man who adored his wife, was an amazing father, and was proud of his four grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are invited to Bill's Life Celebration and viewing; Saturday January 16, 2021 from 9:30 am at St. Jerome Church, 8100 # 1 Colfax St Philadelphia, PA 19136, followed by his Funeral Mass at 11 am.
His Interment will be at Washington Crossing National cemetery on Monday, January 18, 2021 at 10 am.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in honor of Bill may be made to Ella's Retreat, 1503 East Willow Grove Ave. Wyndmoor, PA 19038 or to the Salvation Army of Greater Philadelphia, 4050 Conshohocken Ave. Philadelphia, PA 19131.
During these uncertain times, the family understands and respects all of Bill's family and friends that are unable to attend his Life celebration or burial. The family asks that you hold him in your thoughts by reflecting on a good memory of Bill during his life.
