Obituary

Michael P. Griffin, Sr. of Philadelphia, passed away on Tuesday, September 22, 2020 at Wesley Enhanced Living, Burholme where he had been residing. He was 85 years old. "Mike" as he was affectionately known by to his family and friends, was born in Philadelphia to the late Harry and Rose (née Brennan) Griffin. He was the husband to the late Helen (née Donahue) Griffin who passed away in 1993.

Mike was a proud veteran of the United States Army and started work as a union waiter at a young age and worked as a waiter, maître d', and manager at Vitale's Restaurant in Philadelphia. He later worked for the Philadelphia Parking Authority and was also a member of the Teamsters Union. Mike was a longtime and dedicated Democratic Committee Person of Philadelphia's 42nd Ward. He was a friendly neighbor, involved in his community and always lent a helping hand to those who needed it most. He was a devoted Philadelphia sports fan, especially area high school sports and could frequently be seen riding on his bike in Northeast Philadelphia. He also enjoyed playing shuffleboard, was an avid history buff and loved his time at the Wildwood shore. Above all, Mike was a good man, loving husband, devoted companion, cherished friend, adored father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle.

Mike is survived by his loving companion, Lorraine Szwanki and his children: Michael P. Griffin, Jr. (Jamie), George E. Griffin, Sr. (Deborah), and Kathleen G. Kucowski (Kenneth) along with his ten grandchildren: Michael P. III, Shane, James, Patrick, Jacquelyn, Allyson, George E., Jr., Anthony, Charlotte, Natalie, and four great grandchildren: Andrew, Patrick, Aiden, and Willow. He was predeceased by his six siblings: Harry Griffin, Nancy Sweeney, George Griffin, Mary Jane Heffernan, Betty McLaughlin, Joan Gavin along with his nephew, Richard Weigand, and his brother in law, Harry Donahue.

Relatives and friends are invited to Mike's Life Celebration on Tuesday, September 29, 2020 from 8:00-9:30 a.m. at Dean-Geitner-Givnish Life Celebration Home, 7900 Oxford Ave. Philadelphia, PA 19111 followed by his funeral mass at the church of St. Cecilia, 535 Rhawn St. Philadelphia, PA 19111 at 10:00 a.m. Interment at Washington Crossing National Cemetery will be private. Services for Mike will be livestreamed on the Dean-Geitner-Givnish Life Celebration Facebook Page. The visitation will be livestreamed from 8:00-9:30 a.m. and the mass will be livestreamed at 10:00 a.m. People wishing to honor Mike's lifelong commitment to family and community can make donations in his name to Rock Ministries, 2755 Kensington Ave. Philadelphia, PA 19134, www.therockphilly.org.
