George Elwood Ellis passed away on May 14, 2022, in Philadelphia, PA. He was 82 years old.

George is survived by his wife, Jeong Hye; his daughter, Grace Ellis Barber, and her husband, Matthew, of Grove City, PA; his stepdaughters Jin Hee and Hyo Jin of Korea; and 2 grandsons and 4 granddaughters. He is survived also by his brother Robert Ellis, his sister Mary Jane Cramer-Lewis, and many nephews and nieces. He is preceded in death by his father, Robert, and mother, Gertrude Ellis, both of Philadelphia, PA.

George was proud to be born and raised in Philadelphia, where he graduated from Thomas Alva Edison High School in 1958. He went on to receive a Bachelor's Degree from Bob Jones University, a Master of Divinity from Westminster Seminary, and eventually, a Ph.D. in Church History at Temple University. He was a devoted single father to his daughter Grace for many years before marrying his wife, Jeong Hye, in 2001. George was a retiree of the United States Postal Service where he worked as a letter carrier for over 35 years, during which he served as a NALC union shop steward.

George was a longtime member of Calvary Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Glenside, PA. He enjoyed fine art, classical music, and deep dives into history and literature, but never lost his devotion to his hometown sports teams, especially the 76ers. His family and friends will always remember him as a quirky, inquisitive man, of strong opinions and unexpected tenderness.

A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, June 4, 2022 at 2:00pm, with a reception to follow, at Calvary Orthodox Presbyterian Church, 734 Willow Grove Ave, Glenside, PA 19038 (corner of Willow Grove Avenue and Church Road). All are welcome to attend and celebrate George's life.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Christian School Scholarship Fund of Calvary Orthodox Presbyterian Church, Glenside.
