Obituary

Myers

Donald Lewis Myers, age 71, passed away on July 6th, 2022 after a short, vigorous fight against esophageal cancer. Loving son of the late Richard Lewis and Dorothy Myers, he carried their gifts of love, joy and devotion throughout his life, generously sharing them with his wife, Peg (MargaretRose), daughter Emily (Bob) Savino, sons Adam and Don (Colleen) Myers, with his grandchildren Dominic, Nicholas, Ryan, Hayleigh, Genevieve, Bennett, and Don Mack; and with brothers David (Cathy), Dennis (Judy) & Daniel (deceased). His caring encompassed all extended family, including his mother-in-law Julie McHugh and her children: Tom (Peg), Pat (Bud) & Tim (deceased) (Deb) and their families & his many nieces and nephews, keeping abreast of their journeys through life and supporting them with love, prayer and various acts of kindness.

A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and family man, he included many friends as part of his family, including Maryann & Bob, Dave, Theresa & Art, Linda & Steve, Dot & Bob & Roberta. Always there for his family, with advice, rides, hard work, or, as his family jokingly said, "pop-pop daycare", he demonstrated love with actions: assembling various appliance kits, planting gardens and morphing into the homework guru with grandchildren, a neighbor who knew how to be a good neighbor, or volunteering at St. Petri-Hope Lutheran church as a Sunday School teacher, and on Church council, as president, or treasurer, always willing to lend a strong back for church related festivities, plus he stayed for clean-up! He enjoyed sports, playing in a men's basketball league for fun and volunteering as a coach with Moss Athletic Association in teaching leagues, helping players develop skills enabling them to enjoy their sport with confidence and imparting the meaning of good, fair sportsmanship. No one sat on the bench when Don coached.

Don woke up every day happy, with a smile, definitely a morning person with an agenda. He would want everyone to be aware of some sneaky symptoms of the disease that stole him from us, so that others can stay with the ones they love a little longer. Consistent deep belching, frequent hiccups, loss of appetite, difficulty swallowing, a feeling of fullness & a change in voice are 6 warnings that should not be ignored. Don had no history of GERD or heartburn, but it can be an early alarm for adenocarcinoma. Investigate with a physician sooner rather than later.

Family and friends are invited to Don's Life Celebration on Wednesday, July 20th, at the John F. Givnish Funeral Home, 10975 Academy Rd., Philadelphia, PA 19154, from 6 – 8 PM, and on Thursday, July 21st, at St. John Lutheran Church, 3101 Tyson Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19139 from 10:0 am to 11:00 am, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 am.
