Tribute & Message From The Family

Robert H. "Bob" Hilferty passed away peacefully with his wife and children by his side on Friday, September 10, 2021. He was 73.

Bob was the beloved husband to Joanne Hilferty (nee Blancuzzi) for 52 years. In addition to his wife, Bob is survived by his loving children, Robert H. Hilferty Jr. (Amanda), Michael J. Hilferty (Meredith), and Janine Skahan (Adam); his brother, James J. Hilferty (Helen); sister-in-law, Patricia Hilferty; and eight grandchildren, Abigail, Mareis, Madeleine, Cameron, Adam Jr., Ella, Erin and Leila. Bob is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was the loving son to the late Harry J. and Jane (nee Haughey) Hilferty, and brother to the late Harry B. Hilferty.

Bob grew up in Philadelphia and attended St. Ambrose Grade School. He graduated from Cardinal Dougherty High School in 1967. He was drafted in 1968 and served one year in Vietnam. Upon his return, he married his high school sweetheart, Joanne. From that point, they were inseparable and were together for almost 60 years.

Bob was a proud and decorated Vietnam Veteran and had a deep love for his country. While serving in the 25th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army, he obtained the rank of Sergeant and earned the Combat Infantryman Badge (CIB). He also received the Army Commendation Medal for heroism and two Bronze Star Medals for valor.

Bob's pride and joy was his family. After 25 years, he retired early from the United States Postal Service to help babysit his grandchildren. He loved celebrating milestone events and holidays and was always with his family. He enjoyed being at the shore with his wife, children, and grandchildren and never missed a sunset. He will be remembered for his sense of humor and how he always had everyone laughing. He was definitely the "King of Dad Jokes."
Bob had a lifelong love for music and was an expert in music trivia. He worked as a DJ on Friday nights for many years and most recently hosted his own internet radio show, Hilf's Hot LZ.

Relatives and friends are invited to greet the family on Monday, September 27, 2021 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the John F. Givnish Funeral Home, 10975 Academy Rd., Philadelphia, PA 19154. A morning visitation will also take place on Tuesday, September 28, 2021 from 8:30 AM until 10:00 AM, also at the John F. Givnish Funeral Home. The Funeral Mass will follow at 11:00 AM at St. Cecilia Church, 535 Rhawn St., Philadelphia, PA 19111. Interment will follow at Washington Crossing National Cemetery, Newtown, PA.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Bob's name may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or Tunnels to Towers.

Condolence & Memory Journal

Dear Joanne & Family, We were heartbroken to hear of the loss of Bob, our dear brother in law and uncle. Bob was a caring and kind man, who loved God, his family and his country. His love of God helped him through many of life's challenges. He showed his love for his country through his honorable service in the military. But his greatest love of all was for his family. Joanne, you were the love of his life. His children were his heart and soul. His grandchildren were his joy. Together, you and Bob raised a beautiful family that he was so proud of. Bob opened his heart and home to family and many friends. He always had a smile on his face, a twinkle in his eye and a joke on his lips to tell. Bob's gift to us all was Love and Laughter. It was his Legacy. May we carry his Legacy of Love and Laughter in our hearts and memories forever. All our love, Al, Barbara, Alisa, Johnny, Alfie, Brit, & Joe

Bob was truly one of the guys from the neighborhood. We played ball in the schoolyard and also, spring, a racing game. We also flipped baseball cards and I lost a lot of cards to Bob! Several years ago, I ran into him on Frankford Ave. It was like we never left the school yard. I hope to run into him again! Take care Joanne.
